The Transitional Spaces, Transformative Systems landscape and architectural approach focuses on moments of change during the school day and through the seasons. The transition between indoor and outdoor spaces is softened at entrances, classrooms, and outside of the cafeteria. Classrooms throughout the school are enhanced with skylights, a glass solarium and greenhouse, and outdoor classroom space. The result is an experience of interior space that is more closely related to the outdoors.
Food is grown in greenhouses at classrooms, in a kitchen garden, and in permaculture forest plantings. This provides healthy food for kids, and strengthens relationships between adults and kids cultivating food. A swale wraps around the school, serving as a buffer between vehicular traffic and the expanded usable space around the school building. Forest health is addressed by trimming knotweed yearly and planting forest trees in its place, grown from seed in the greenhouses. As seasonal floods inundate the forest, responsive decks invite interaction with high and low water levels.
