ITS CLIMANTARY:
What is a microclimate? Imagine our world. There are various climates throughout the surface. Now imagine that our site is the world, it has it's own varying climates as well. We took our ipad and zoomed in. Now we're drawing a picture.
A climate is determined by measurements of temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind and precipitation. The microclimate is simplified to wind patterns, sun/shade patterns, wet vs. dry and humidity. By analyzing these smaller climate zones, we can design for smaller people.

microclimate Zones and CHARACTERISTICS
solar aspect
In order to determine the needs of the site, we wanted to understand the warm and cool places. This is not defined by the fluctuating weather or temperature throughout the year, but by the EM Radiation intensity of each area. Basically, where the sun hits the ground, it will be warmer. Each diagram shows the mass of sunny, partial shade, and shade areas. By understanding these parts, we can design to accommodate for those places. It is helpful to know where the snow will melt the fastest, for example.
Climate Zones
These zones are what we determined to be separate climates. The small circles are representing the trees, which provide their own microclimate. There is a wide variety of climates in the space, varying from cool and dry to warm and humid. Each climate is important to take into account during the design process.
These sections show how a zone can be determined. For example, a single tree has a different climactic effect than a forest of trees.
Wind
The prevailing wind direction is from the South South East. This means a large portion of the site can be windy and may need wind screens especially in the winter.
Caroline Elementary sits in a valley surrounded by hills that run north-south. This means the area can have intense winds that change direction at a moments notice.
